“But when the kindness and love of God our Savior was revealed, he saved us. It was not because of any good deeds that we ourselves had done, but because of his own mercy that he saved us, through the Holy Spirit…” Titus 3:4 & 5 Good News Bible
I looked with amazement at the envelope. It was addressed to “Uncle Mel and Aunt Peggy” at a 12 year old obsolete address! There was no evidence on the envelope that it had been sent back to the sender (a niece) and resent to us. Someone had written in the correct address and it had gotten to me before Christmas!
Years ago I got into the habit of taking some special treat to my local post office at different times of the year, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, etc. with a card from my office. This was before all the shootings in post office locations by disgruntled employees and before the anthrax threat. Sometimes I would just take something (a box of cookies or candy) with a note of appreciation.
Well, I guess getting to know and showing care for our postal workers paid off. They always know me when I go to the post office and really appreciate their notices of appreciation.
Now here was the Christmas card that should never have gotten to me but did even though it didn’t even have a last name! I saved the envelope to take by the post office the next time I went. In a few weeks when that time came, I asked the postal clerk if I could speak to the postmistress about this envelope. She said the postmistress was not in and what was the matter. With all the misdelivered mail one gets I suppose she thought, “here comes another complaint.” I told her about the envelope and how surprised and pleased I was to get it even though it was years past the forwarding process the post office usually follows. She smiled said she would share it with the one who delivers our mail. I wrote a note on the envelope, “Thanks so very much, this was fantastic service.”
Kindness really does pay and intentional acts of kindness in this world really do make a difference. Try one today!
